TOUR OF THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COURT AND INFORMATION SESSION WITH JUDGE HUNTINGFORD
August 19 @ 8:45 am – 9:30 am
The launch of the Specialist Approach to Domestic and Family Violence was celebrated at Alice Springs Local Court on 9 October 2020. The Specialist Approach draws upon local, national and international expertise in domestic and family violence to deliver a court response tailored to the Central Australian context that increases the safety and well-being of victims of domestic and family violence, holds offenders to account for their use of violence and offers offenders’ greater opportunities to access assistance to stop using violence.
With safety as a key priority of the Specialist Approach, victims of domestic and family violence are offered increased opportunities to access risk assessment, safety planning and support from specialist service providers who are co-located at the Court. Victims can engage in proceedings with increased safety and comfort through the use of specially designed Court facilities that offer a separate entrance, separate waiting areas, improved AVL facilities and a purpose built Courtroom.
The Specialist Domestic and Family Violence List offers defendants who plead guilty the opportunity to attend a rehabilitation program, take responsibility for their use of violence and have their completion of the rehabilitation program considered in sentencing. Victims in Specialist List matters are offered support from specialist service providers and are empowered to participate in proceedings through flexible arrangements to the extent that they are comfortable.
