About this workshop
Each of us thinks, feels and behaves differently. Some people (approximately 10-20% of the adult population)
think, feel and behave in a way that challenges others and is often described as high conflict, unreasonable
and complicated. These individuals create or exacerbate conflict and cause disruption in workplaces, families
and the broader community. While we dread our encounters with challenging individuals, it is an unavoidable
part of our lives. If we don’t manage our interactions with them effectively, these individuals can damage our
relationships, careers and health.

This course covers three main areas:

Understanding
Communication & Management Strategies
Self-Care Strategies

Training sessions will be comprised of both activities and lectures that will focus on managing challenging
people, their high conflict behavior and complex communications by explaining:

  • Why they act this way (from a simple, brain perspective)
  • How trauma and fear drive their behavior
  • Why you dread them
  • How you can adapt or develop a strategy for managing them
  • How to deal with defensiveness, stubbornness, rigidity, anger, tears, all-or-nothing thinking
  • How to use techniques to calm them, including BIFF (Brief, Information, Friendly and Firm) responses
  • How to shift them from blaming to problem-solving
  • How to get them making proposals to reduce or solve problems, rather than creating more
  • Why this new information will protect your job, your relationships and your sanity
  • How you can debrief and reflect upon the impact of these individuals on your life
  • How to take care of you
